Two Stories About Flying Summary

Part I: His First Flight

“His First Flight” is a story about a young seagull who is afraid to fly. He lives with his parents, two brothers, and a sister on a high rocky cliff near the sea. His brothers and sister have already learned to fly, but he is still sitting alone on the ledge. Whenever he looks down at the sea, he becomes frightened. He thinks his wings are too weak to carry him through the air. His parents try many times to encourage him. They call him, scold him, and even threaten to leave him without food if he does not fly. Still, the young seagull cannot find the courage to jump. He watches his family flying freely over the sea and feels lonely and helpless. His parents teach the other young birds how to catch fish and move safely through the air. The young seagull wants to join them, but his fear stops him. Nearly twenty-four hours pass, and nobody brings him anything to eat. He becomes very hungry and weak. The sun grows hotter, making him feel even more uncomfortable. He looks at his family on a nearby rock, hoping someone will come to help him. He tries to attract their attention, but they do not come. He even stands on one leg and pretends to sleep. However, his mother notices him. She is eating a fish, and the young seagull becomes excited when he sees it. He cries loudly because he wants some food. His mother picks up a small piece of fish and flies towards him. He stretches his neck and moves forward, expecting her to feed him. But she stops a little distance away, keeping the fish just beyond his reach. The young seagull cannot control his hunger anymore. Without thinking about the danger, he jumps towards the food. Suddenly, he falls from the ledge and screams in fear. For a moment, he believes he will fall into the sea. Then something wonderful happens. His wings spread naturally, and the wind supports his body. Instead of falling, he begins to fly. He feels the air moving beneath his wings and slowly understands that he can control his movements. His fear disappears, and he becomes full of happiness. He flies higher and lower, enjoying the freedom of the open sky. His mother, father, brothers, and sister fly around him, making joyful sounds. They are happy because he has finally learned to fly. Soon, his family lands on the sea and calls him to join them. When he lowers his feet, they sink into the water, and he becomes frightened again. But his body floats safely on the surface. His family gathers around him and offers him pieces of fish as a reward. The young seagull has successfully completed his first flight. This story teaches us that fear can stop us from trying new things, but courage and confidence help us succeed. Sometimes, we discover our abilities only when we take the first step.

Part II: The Black Aeroplane

“The Black Aeroplane” is a mysterious story about a pilot who faces great danger while flying through a storm. The pilot is travelling from France to England in his old Dakota aeroplane. It is around one o'clock at night, and the weather is pleasant. The sky is clear, the stars are shining, and the moon is rising behind him. Everything seems peaceful, and the pilot feels happy. He is looking forward to reaching England and spending time with his family. He especially thinks about having breakfast with them the next morning. During the journey, he contacts Paris Control by radio and informs them about his flight. The control centre advises him to turn twelve degrees west. He follows the instruction and continues flying. After some time, he notices huge black storm clouds ahead of him. They look like tall mountains standing in the sky. He knows that flying into such clouds can be very dangerous. He also understands that his old aeroplane cannot fly high enough to pass over them. At first, he thinks about returning to Paris, where he will be safe. However, he strongly wants to reach home. Because of this desire, he makes a risky decision and flies straight into the storm. As soon as he enters the clouds, everything becomes dark. He cannot see the sky, the ground, or anything outside his window. His aeroplane begins to shake and twist violently in the strong wind. The pilot becomes worried and checks his instruments. To his horror, his compass is no longer working properly. He also discovers that his radio has stopped working, so he cannot contact Paris Control for help. Now he has no idea which direction to take. He is completely lost in the dark storm, with very little fuel remaining. Just when he begins to lose hope, he sees another aeroplane flying close to him. It is a strange black aeroplane without lights on its wings. The pilot is surprised but also relieved because he is no longer alone. He can see the other pilot, who signals to him to follow. Trusting the stranger, he turns his Dakota and follows the black aeroplane through the storm. The mysterious pilot seems to know the correct way. They continue flying for about half an hour. Meanwhile, the Dakota's fuel becomes dangerously low. The pilot knows he has only enough fuel for another five or ten minutes. He becomes frightened again because he may not reach an airport in time. Suddenly, the black aeroplane begins to descend, and the pilot follows it. Soon, they come out of the storm clouds. To his great relief, he sees the lights of an airport runway below. He lands his Dakota safely and feels thankful to the unknown pilot who guided him. He looks around to find the black aeroplane, but it has disappeared. Wanting to thank the person who saved his life, he goes to the control tower and speaks to a woman working there. He asks about the other aeroplane that was flying near him. The woman looks surprised and laughs. She tells him that no other aeroplane was flying in the sky that night because the weather was terrible. According to her, his Dakota was the only aircraft they had seen. The pilot is shocked and confused. He cannot understand who helped him through the storm when his compass and radio were not working. He wonders how the strange aeroplane appeared and disappeared without leaving any sign. The story ends without revealing the identity of the mysterious pilot. This makes the ending interesting and leaves readers thinking about what really happened. The story teaches us about hope, trust, and help during difficult situations. It also reminds us that careless decisions can put our lives in danger. The pilot's strong wish to reach home made him enter a dangerous storm, but an unknown helper guided him to safety.
