Act I – Shruti’s Musical Dilemma
The play is about Shruti Sharma, a young and talented violinist. She loves music and wants to try different kinds of music. However, she is confused because she respects traditional Indian classical music, while she also enjoys modern fusion music. Shruti is the daughter of Nabin Sharma, a famous and strict musician who strongly believes that Indian classical music is the purest and best form of music. At the same time, Shruti is a member of an Indo-Western fusion music group with her friends Iqbal, Avinash, and Peter.
Shruti’s Worries and Courage
At the beginning of Act I, Shruti and her friends are practising music together. There are many musical instruments and posters of famous flute players around them. The atmosphere is friendly and creative. The friends talk about a newspaper article that praises Shruti’s performance with her father. Avinash and Peter are very happy about Shruti’s success. They call her a rising star and even jokingly ask her to give them a party.
However, Shruti does not look happy. She is worried about telling her father about their upcoming fusion concert. She knows that her father has very strict views about music and may not allow her to take part in the concert. Her friends encourage her to speak honestly with her father. They tell her that it is better to tell the truth than to hide things. With their support, Shruti gathers courage and decides to talk to her father.
Act II – Conflict with Her Father
In Act II, the scene moves to Shruti’s home. During dinner, Shruti nervously tells her parents about the upcoming fusion concert. Nabin becomes angry when he hears about it. He strongly opposes the idea and tells Shruti that she cannot take part in the concert.
Nabin does not like fusion music because he believes that mixing Western music with Indian classical music can damage the purity of classical music. He does not respect group performances and feels that true music should follow traditional methods. Shruti tries to explain her feelings and asks him to attend one of their rehearsals before making a decision. However, Nabin makes fun of the idea and leaves angrily.
Shruti’s mother, Leela, is also unhappy that Shruti did not tell them about the concert earlier. She scolds Shruti for hiding the truth. However, she understands her daughter’s feelings and feels sorry for her situation. Shruti becomes very sad because she thinks that all the hard work of her music group may be wasted.
Act III – Father’s Change of Heart
In Act III, Shruti goes to meet her friends for what she thinks will be their last rehearsal. She believes that she may have to leave the group because of her father’s opposition. However, something unexpected happens. Her parents arrive at the rehearsal and quietly watch the group perform.
As the music begins, Nabin slowly becomes interested in the performance. He listens carefully and notices that the Indian classical raga is still present in the music even though it is mixed with Western musical elements. He realises that the group has not destroyed the classical music. Instead, they have created something new while respecting the traditional form.
The music touches Nabin emotionally. He enjoys the performance and finally applauds the group. His attitude changes completely. He praises Shruti and her friends for their talent and hard work. He even offers them his music room so that they can practise there in the future.
Understanding and Acceptance
Later, Nabin explains that his opposition was mainly because he was afraid of losing the traditions of Indian classical music. He wanted to protect the music he loved and respected. Leela reminds him about his own past. She tells him that he too had once gone against his family of singers when he decided to learn the violin. At that time, the violin was considered a foreign instrument in Indian classical music.
Nabin understands that he had made the same kind of mistake with Shruti. He realises that music can change with time while still respecting its traditions. He accepts Shruti’s choice and fully supports her. He promises to encourage her and cheer for her group at the upcoming concert.
Power of Music and Family Understanding
The play shows the conflict between tradition and modern ideas. It also shows how parents and children may have different opinions about their choices and interests. However, honest communication, trust and understanding can help solve such problems.
The play also gives the message that true music does not need strict boundaries. Different styles of music can come together and create something beautiful. Most importantly, the story teaches us that family relationships become stronger when people listen to each other, respect different opinions and support one another.
